Cabinet Brief

After lengthy deliberations the Cabinet today authorized a number of milestone changes to the management of local authorities in the country.

Meeting under the Chairmanship of President Mwai Kibaki at State House Nairobi the Cabinet requested that a bill to effect the changes be published for consideration by parliament at its next session.

The Cabinet authorized amendments to the Local Government Act, cap 265 paving way for improved management of local authorities around the country.

The proposed amendments include;

- Reforms in the management of local authorities.

- Strengthening of the systems in the administration and financial management of local authorities.

- The direct election of Mayors and chairmen of local authorities by voters.

- Rationalization of local authorities into viable ones with a possibility of mergers between certain authorities.

The Cabinet also approved the holding of a Conference by ministers in charge of meteorological departments. The meeting will be held in Nairobi next January.

The Cabinet also approved the holding in Nairobi of a meeting to deal with the promotion of Law, Health and security in East Africa.
