Cabinet brief

The Cabinet today reviewed progress on the proposed Lamu Port , Sudan and Ethiopia Transport Corridor Project.

The Cabinet authorized the Ministry of Transport together with the offices of Deputy Prime Minister and ministry of finance and the ministry of lands to facilitate the feasibility, design and acquisition of land for the project.

At a meeting held at State House Nairobi under the chairmanship of President Mwai Kibaki, the Cabinet noted and discussed the proposed implementation work plan for the entire project. Construction of Phase One of the project is set to begin in June next year.

At the meeting President Kibaki underlined the importance of Kenya having a second transport corridor that would open up vast parts of the country. The President said that the second transport corridor project would connect Kenya to the vast territories of Sudan and Ethiopia with an additional market of 100 Million people.

The President said the project was a priority and government will facilitate its completion.

The Cabinet also discussed the proposed draft Marriage Bill 2009, the Matrimonial Property Bill 2009 and the Family Protection Bill 2009. The aim of the bills is to consolidate the marriage and family related laws and ensure that men and women enjoy equal rights in marriage.

In this regard the Cabinet decided to hold further consultations with Members of Parliament and other stakeholders in order to broaden consensus on the bills before they are tabled in parliament.

Today’s Cabinet meeting also approved the hosting of the sub-regional offices for East and Horn of Africa of the World Organization for Animal Health in Nairobi .
