President Mwai Kibaki unveils Grand Coalition Cabinet

President Mwai Kibaki today at State House Nairobi named a 40-member grand coalition cabinet, and thanked all Kenyans for their patience in the period of negotiations and consultations over a new government.

The Head of State named ODM leader Raila Odinga as Prime Minister with Musalia Mudavadi and Uhuru Kenyatta as Deputy prime Ministers While retaining Kalonzo Musyoka as vice President

In naming the coalition cabinet, President Kibaki thanked Mediatos led by former UN secretary general Kofi Annan and friendly countries for the support and encouragement to Kenyans to overcome the political challenges the Country experienced.

He also thanked the Prime Minister Hon Raila Odinga and all political leaders in the Country for upholding the spirit of dialogue, which enabled unlocking of the deadlock.

" I want to assure you all that l will do everything possible to ensure that our country Kenya is steered along the path of peace, unity and stability", the President said.

The Head of State said the enactment of National Accord and Reconciliation act and the announcement of the grand coalition cabinet was a demonstration of the commitment of the political leadership to move ahead and pay more attention to addressing the challenges facing Kenyans.

"The Government has increased security presence in affected areas in order to prevent a recurrence of the violence and mayhem', The President said in relation to the plight of people evicted from their farms by the recent hooliganism.

The head of state said the altitude among some political leaders that communities be restricted to particular areas or some Kenyans be perceived to be foreigners in their own country was backward and unacceptable.

He said the new expanded coalition Government gives priority attention to areas that are critical to transformation of the Country into a newly industrialized Nation status, the new ministries being Industrialization, planning and vision 2030 and Nairobi Metropolitan Development.

He reiterated the need for all Kenyans to enjoy equal rights including working and reaping the benefits of their labour anywhere in the country without hindrance under the law saying discrimination of whatever form would not be allowed by the coalition Government.

The President said he had formed the new Ministry of Northern Kenya to focus on and address the unique challenges facing ASAL areas.

The President challenged members of the new cabinet and the entire national leadership to set aside politics and get down to work and build a new Kenya "where justice is our shield and defender and where peace, liberty and plenty will be found throughout".
