President Mwai Kibaki was today among thousands of mourners who attended the funeral of the late Isaiah Mwai Mathenge at his Seremwai Estate home in Nyeri. The late Mathenge 76 a retired Provincial commissioner and the former MP for Nyeri town died at the Nairobi Hospital on 18th January after an illness The President accompanied by First Lady Lucy Kibaki had earlier attended a requiem mass at Our Lady of Consolata Catholic Church which was conducted by Archbishop Nicodemus Kirima of the Nyeri Catholic Arch-diocese. Eulogizing him, President Kibaki noted that the late Mathenge was an outstanding public servant who dedicated his life to the service of the people. The President noted that the late Mathenge's commitment to duty was legendary adding that everywhere he worked the late Mathenge left a mark of meritocracy. "We must thank God for this great man whose service was dedicated to the improvement of this nation," he added. The President noted that due to his devotion to duty the late Mathenge was instrumental in overseeing programmes that had a direct bearing to the welfare of the people. President Kibaki said the late Mathenge's larger than life profile was
worthy emulating. The Ceremony was also attended by several cabinet ministers, assistant ministers, members of parliament and people from all walks of life. |
