Government to crack on corrupt Sacco officials

President Mwai Kibaki today said the Government will not condone the loss of public funds from cooperative societies and promised a crack down of those involved in the sleaze.

President emphasized that cooperative societies played a crucial role in the economy of the country and should not be left to fail.

President Kibaki was speaking in Nanyuki when he officially opened Laikipia Teachers Sacco Society building.

“Those found to have misappropriated member’s money will be arrested and prosecuted” He said.

Noting that members expected honest from officials managing their societies, President Kibaki said Sacco’s were important institutions for small scale savers.

The President who was accompanied by First lady Lucy Kibaki, asked officials charged with responsibility of running Sacco’s to invest wisely in projects that will ensure the growth of members deposits.

He said Sacco members expected to get loans at the shortest time possible and this can only be done if the societies improved on their liquidity.

One way of improving their liquidity the President added was by recruiting more members into the cooperative movement.

In This connection President Kibaki asked Laikipia teachers Sacco to venture outside their traditional institutions for membership recruitment.


Said the President “I wish to advise more people to join the cooperative movement and especially parents now that the Government has introduced free primary education and use savings made to improve their lot.”

Once again the President said the Government was keen on the success of the free primary programme adding that not even the ongoing drought will frustrate this goal.

He said appropriate measures had been put in place to ensure that no Kenyan child missed school on account of the drought.

Said the President “the drought should not be used as an excuse to keep children out of school.”

The President said the Government was spending three and half times the amount used three years ago on public service and attributed this to prudent management of the country’s resources.

In the same vein he asked Kenyans to continue paying their taxes so that the Government can have a sound revenue base from which it can draw funds for public service.

The Chairman of Laikipia Sacco Society Mr. Anthony Mutahi said the Sacco’s share capital and members deposit stood at Kshs 261 187 897 with a monthly turn over on interest of Kshs Million 1.9

During the occasion Mr. Mutahi presented the President with two cheques for Kshs 80,000 and Kshs 20,000 towards the famine relief efforts and to assist those affected by the Nairobi building tragedy respectively.

Others speakers at the function were Minister for Cooperative Njeru Ndwiga, Assistant Ministers Kilemi Mwiria and Mwangi Kiunjuri.

Later President Kibaki opened the 42 bed Nanyuki district Hospital women’s ward constructed at a cost of Kshs 4.84 million.

The Funds for the Project were generated from Harambee’s cost sharing and constituency Development fund CDF.

President Kibaki hailed the projects completion saying it has gone a long way in decongesting the in patient services and improving delivery of health care.

“ I would like to thank those involved in the realization of this project for a job well done and appeal to those with the resources to plough back some of them to public utilities in their home area,” He said.

He commended the hospital’s management board and medical personnel for improving on the facilities at the hospital and singled out the local mp Mwangi Kiunjuri for being in the forefront in this endeavor.

On his part the President noted the Government was taking development to all corners of the country indiscriminate.

He said the Government will not leave any of its citizens to suffer on account of where they come from.

Also Present was Cabinet Minister John Michuki, Assistant ministers Joshua Toro, Wilfred Machage Stephen Ole Ntutu, Mp GG Kariuki and Rift Valley PC Wilfred Ndolo.
