The outgoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) senior resident representative to Kenya) Samuel Itam today expressed optimism that Kenya was on the right track to economic recovery. He particularly hailed the government's poverty eradication programme saying it had shown signs of success. Mr. Itam was speaking at State House Nairobi today when he bade farewell to President Mwai Kibaki. He was accompanied by his successor Jurgen Reitmaier. Mr.Itam expressed IMF's willingness to assist the government towards the road to economic recovery. He however advised the government to balance between economic recovery and reforms so that one programme does not overshadow the other. On his part President Kibaki thanked the IMF for the support it has given to the country over the years and especially at this difficult economic times. The President said the government would continue to work with the IMF in an open and frank dialogue concerning Kenya's economic recovery. President Kibaki acknowledged that the country was going through difficult economic times but said it was keen on succeeding in addressing issues of poverty and unemployment. Present were the minister for finance David Mwiraria ,assistant minister for foreign affairs Moses Wetangula and the head of the public service amb. Francis Muthaura. |
