Famine
relief kitty receives more donations
The national famine relief kitty today got a boost of Kshs. 8.6 million from Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Tourism, Teachers Service Commission, the National Examination Council and Kenyans living in Uganda.
The donations from the ministries included funds from staff members and state corporations under their mandate.
Receiving the donations at State House Nairobi, President Mwai Kibaki thanked Kenyans for responding positively to his appeal for assistance to those affected by famine.
The President noted that although this seasons rains were good and farmers planted, affected areas will continue to require famine relief until after the harvest.
We thank you very much for your donations. We still need more donations because although the rains have come and people have planted, they will require assistance until they harvest their crop, President Kibaki said.
In this regard President Kibaki welcomed more donations, saying those affected by famine still need assistance.
The Ministry of Agriculture donated Kshs. 4,460,490.40 which was presented to the President by Agriculture Minister Kipruto Arap Kirwa who was accompanied by his Co-operative Development counterpart Njeru Ndwiga and officials of state corporations under the ministry of Agriculture.
Ministry of Tourism and Wild-Life donated Kshs. 694,234 which was presented to the President by Tourism Minister Morris Dzoro.
The Teachers Service Commissions donation of Kshs. 1,075,890 was presented by the commisions Secretary Mr. Gabriel Lengoiboni while the National Examinination Councils donation of Kshs. 1,244,500 was handed over to the President by the councils Chief Executive Officer Mr. Paul Wasanga.
Kenyans living in Uganda gave Kshs. 1.1 million shillings which was presented to the President by Kenyas High Commissioner to Uganda Ambassador Japheth Ratemo Getugi.
The Kenyans living in Uganda also donated Kshs. 100,000 to the Kenya Chapter of the Organization Of African First Ladies Against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA).
Present were Special Programs Minister John Munyes and his Science and Technology Minister Noah Wekesa who is also the acting Minister for Education, Foreign Assistant Minister Danson Mungatana, Permanent Secretaries Rachel Arunga and Prof. Karega Mutahi among others. |
