First Lady censures inciters

First Lady Lucy Kibaki has censured politicians who incited the youth to engage in acts of lawlessness resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of property in Kisumu last Saturday.

She regretted that some selfish politicians had resolved to using innocent youth to further their political ambitions in the pretext of opposing the new constitution, saying such politicians did not qualify to be leaders and should not be trusted.

"I urge Kenyans not to listen to these dishonest people who have decided to use all evil means to oppose the constitution in order to discredit the Government which they claim to serve," Mrs. Kibaki said.

The First Lady was speaking today when she addressed a public rally at Kamukunji Stadium in Nyeri town.

She said Kenya was a democratic nation and people should not use violence to prevent others from expressing their opinions freely.

Stressing that the proposed new constitution was one of the best in the world, Mrs. Kibaki appealed to wananchi to come out in large numbers and vote for it in the forthcoming referendum so that they could be assured of improved living standards.

"It is our responsibility to ensure that we vote for this constitution because we cannot afford to listen to people who do not care for the common mwananchi's welfare," she said.

The First Lady further pointed out that the new constitution will end all sorts of discrimination and ensure that all Kenyans were equal before the law.

She once again cautioned wananchi to be wary of opponents of the new constitution who were peddling lies in order to deny Kenyans the document that will guarantee them prosperity.

The First Lady noted that the new constitution was particularly good for women and the youth whose rights have been protected and asked them to be in the forefront in supporting it.

Speaking during the rally, local leaders and wananchi assured her that they had read the constitution and they will vote for it because they know it is good for the country.

Earlier, the First Lady, who was accompanied by Prof. Elizabeth Ngugi, visited Huruma Children's Home and Nyeri Child Support Network Home where she encouraged the orphans to work hard and excel in their studies for a better future.

At both homes, the First lead donated Kshs. 100,000 and various items of foodstuffs and promised them continued support from her office.

Present were local leaders including Nyeri Town Member of Parliament P. G. Mureithi, Nyeri Mayor councillor Karuri Ndeng'era and Central Provincial Commissioner Peter Raburu among others.
