MESSAGE BY HIS EXCELLENCY HON. MWAI KIBAKI, C.G.H., M.P., PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA TO THE KENYAN CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY DURING THE CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS, 23RD DECEMBER 2009, MOMBASA

It is my joy to send this message of goodwill and cordial greetings to all Kenyans during this Christmas season.

This is a season of great rejoicing in which Christians all over the world commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ, the author of the Christian faith.
We celebrate because with the birth of Christ came the assurance of the ultimate triumph of good over evil, the liberation of the human soul from the captivity of sin as well as the promise of eternal life in the Kingdom of God.

As much as the Christmas season is a period of joy, it is also a time for reflection and renewal of conviction. During this season, we are as Christians expected to re-examine our commitment to the Christian faith and dedicate ourselves to a new and fresh relationship with God through Christ.

I call upon all Kenyans to make this season a period of stocktaking. Let us turn within, acknowledge our transgressions, weaknesses and failings and offer prayers of repentance to God.

I urge Kenyans to also remember that the spirit of the Christmas season is the spirit of peace, love and goodwill. As we reflect upon our relationship with God, therefore, let us demonstrate the Christian values of forgiveness, reconciliation, kindness and service. I urge us all to forgive those who have wronged us and move forward in the love of God as individuals and as a nation.

As Christians, we must also remember that we are the salt of the earth. Let us, therefore, make an effort to help the less fortunate among us. We have a moral duty to remember our fellow Kenyans who are suffering from the effects of prolonged drought, those who are yet to be well sheltered as well as the sick, the disabled and all those facing various challenges.

Let us extend a helping hand, no matter how small, for this will bring joy and make Christmas brighter for the disadvantaged members of our society.

I also call upon the relevant arms of the Government to provide adequate security in all parts of the country so that Kenyans can celebrate in a secure and peaceful atmosphere.

I also note that there are businessmen and transporters who take advantage of this season to exploit the people by hiking prices. I appeal to all of us to demonstrate the spirit of goodwill by charging fair prices so as to give people equal opportunity to celebrate Christmas.

Equally important, I wish to note that we have continued to witness unnecessary loss of lives through road traffic accidents largely caused by careless driving. I direct the Police to be extra vigilant at this period to ensure that careless drivers and those driving under the influence of alcohol are apprehended and punished in accordance with the law.

I urge motorists to drive carefully and to obey all traffic regulations in order for us to avoid unnecessary loss of lives.

I wish all Kenyans a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year 2010.
