SPEECH BY HIS
EXCELLENCY HON. MWAI KIBAKI, C.G.H., M.P., PRESIDENT AND COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF
OF THE ARMED FORCES OF THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA DURING THE OFFICIAL OPENING OF
THE 17TH AFRICA ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS, NYAYO NATIONAL STADIUM, NAIROBI, 28TH
JULY, 2010
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I take this opportunity to extend a warm welcome to all the teams, officials, sponsors and supporters to the 17th Confederation of Africa Athletics (C.A.A) Senior championships, in Nairobi, Kenya.
Only 3 years ago, Kenya hosted the 35th edition of International Association of the Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Cross Country championships in the City of Mombasa. I am deeply gratified that our country has been selected this time round to host the 17th Edition of the CAA Senior Championships. I extend my deep gratitude and that of all Kenyans to both the IAAF and CAA for bestowing this great honour on our nation.
I recognize that this championship brings together top Athletes from Africa to compete together. African athletes are among the finest in the world. I have no doubt that the championships will therefore, be of world class standards.
But the competition aside, Ladies and Gentlemen, this championship will also provide a great opportunity of interaction between our different peoples and foster a better understanding between them. It will open our eyes to the many potential linkages that exist between us, which we can exploit for the betterment of our lives.
I, therefore, wish you all a very successful championship and a happy and most memorable stay in Kenya. You should also find time, from your busy schedule to interact with Kenyans, make friends and visit our many attractions around the country.
Finally, I call on Kenyans to come out in large numbers to cheer the athletes and encourage them to greater performance.
With these remarks, Ladies and Gentlemen, I now declare the 17th Confederation of Africa Athletics Senior Athletics Championships officially opened.
Thank you and God
Bless you All.
